UX Fail #3: Where am I here?

Problems with long pagers

Long pagers are "in". But especially for websites with a lot of content, they sometimes (too!) make high demands on good user guidance.

Where exactly is the problem?

Behind the longpager is the idea of guiding the user through the page as if he were "on rails" by scrolling.

This is interesting from a company's point of view, because it can be ensured that users see all important information on one page.

However, not all users are the same. They like to use information in an order that makes sense to them.

If the information is presented according to a different logic, users are irritated and can easily get lost on a page. When searching for the right information, they jump back and forth between different parts of the page and easily lose track of what is happening.

Recommendations from usability research:

  • A navigation element should be visible and usable at all times.
  • Insert clear anchor and landing points to give the page a clear structure.

Make navigation elements understandable. A horizontal arrangement of items is easier to understand than a vertical one.

Give the user clear feedback about what has changed on the page after a click.
